Gardening in Moscow

Notes from a Russian urban gardener

Welcome to My Garden Journal

April 28, 2026

Hello, fellow gardeners! This is my little corner of the internet where I share what works (and what doesn't) when growing plants in Moscow's challenging climate. Short summers, freezing winters, and unpredictable spring weather - it's a fun puzzle to solve with each season.

I started gardening on my balcony five years ago and have since expanded to a small dacha plot outside the city. Here you'll find practical tips, honest reviews of seeds and tools, and reflections on what makes urban gardening so rewarding.

Starting Tomato Seedlings Indoors: My Spring Routine

April 25, 2026

Late April is when I start most of my tomato seedlings on the south-facing windowsill. With our short growing season, getting an early start indoors makes all the difference. This year I'm trying three new varieties alongside my reliable favorites.

The trick is using small peat pots and a basic LED grow light - nothing fancy. I water sparingly and rotate the trays daily so the seedlings don't lean toward the window. By mid-May they'll be ready to harden off before transplanting at the dacha.
